Begin with your books

Write down what you read most: novels, illustrated stories, work PDFs or study notes. Then open a representative sample on a device you already own. This small test reveals whether your priority is adjustable text, a larger page, colour illustrations or writing space. A dedicated e-reader is worth considering when its particular reading experience solves a problem you notice often.

Compare the features that affect each session

Compare screen size, carrying weight, lighting controls and the way pages are turned. If you often read with larger text, check how much of a page remains visible. If colour is central to the material, compare the actual illustration rather than assuming every colour display will look the same. For note-taking, decide whether typed highlights are enough or whether writing with a compatible pen is essential.

Check accessibility at the book and device level. Amazon describes text and layout controls for many Kindle books, alongside assistive features that vary by app, device and content. A fixed-layout illustrated title may behave differently from a reflowable novel. Download a sample and test the settings you need instead of treating a feature name as a guarantee.

Budget for the whole purchase

Include a suitable cover, any required charger and the cost of books you expect to buy. Check the exact model generation, local delivery and warranty support, particularly when ordering from another country. Waterproofing, storage and charging features differ between models; confirm them on the current product page.

Our buying rule is simple: choose the least expensive option that passes your own sample-reading test. Keep the packaging until you have checked the device, and read the seller's return conditions before ordering. This guide compares decision criteria; it does not claim that we have tested every device.
