Measure before you browse

A useful home workspace starts with the space available, the tasks you do and the equipment you already own. Measure the desk, check leg clearance and note the position of sockets. Photograph the setup during a normal working session. You may discover that moving clutter or changing the arrangement helps more than buying another accessory.

Treat the setup as a system

The monitor, keyboard, pointing device and chair need to work together. OSHA's workstation purchasing guide recommends considering adjustability and enough room for frequently used items. For extended laptop work, a separate keyboard and pointing device can allow the screen and input devices to be positioned independently. Before buying a stand, check what other equipment that arrangement will require.

For a stand or monitor arm, confirm the supported dimensions, weight, mounting method and desk compatibility. Check stability at the height you intend to use. A compact keyboard may free space for a mouse, but losing a number pad can be inconvenient if you enter figures all day. Choose for your actual workload, not for the appearance of a desk photograph.

Upgrade one constraint at a time

Pick the most persistent limitation and set a modest budget for addressing it. If cables prevent you from positioning equipment, measure the connection lengths and ports. If documents occupy your typing area, consider whether a stable document holder would help. If lighting reflects off the screen, first try changing the screen or light position.

Read the exact product dimensions, adjustment range, included fittings and return conditions. An accessory described as ergonomic still needs to fit your body, desk and tasks. Try changes during ordinary work and allow room to change position. This is a purchasing checklist, not an individual assessment or a promise that an item will prevent discomfort. Seek appropriate professional advice for persistent symptoms.
